Bone graft in Jerusalem

What is a dental bone graft?

A dental bone graft is a procedure that is performed when there has been bone loss in the jaw. These grafts are placed in areas where there are large gaps and openings in the jaw or where there is insufficient bone available for placing implants or a bridge. By adding synthetic bone, we can build up the problematic area and enable future dental procedures that otherwise would not have been possible because of the tremendous loss of bone.

This procedure is generally called a GBR graft which stands for Guided Bone Regeneration. Thanks to the medical advancement of synthetic bone materials, we can now build up voids that formerly could not be improved upon, given the loss of bone to the jaw. These fantastic new methods allow us to increase bone volume, width, height, and the amount of bone in a specific area.

Why is it necessary to do a dental bone graft?

In many instances, before we perform dental procedures such as implants or reconstructive dentistry, we have to take care of step one, which is performing a dental bone graft. This procedure gives us the necessary base of solid jawbone.

Can you explain or describe the bone graft procedure?

During a bone graft procedure, we add synthetic bone (which looks like salt granules) to the defective area of the jaw. We fill the area, cover it with a membrane, close it, and then let it mature until it becomes part of the patient’s jawbone. Once the jawbone has been fully built up, we can place implants and build and contour teeth around the graft.

Is there any specific aftercare for patients with dental bone grafts?

Following a bone graft procedure, patients should follow instructions from the oral surgeon. It is critical to return to our office and have the dentist check to make sure that everything is healing properly, the hygiene is good, the stitches or sutures are holding, and everything else is in place. We call our patients into the office every few days to make sure that the graft is developing, healing, and forming new bone as we build up the new area.

What is the time process involved for a dental bone graft procedure?

Since dental bone grafts are made up of synthetic materials that turn into patients’ bone, it typically takes four to six months of healing before we start any new procedures. It’s important that patients understand that this procedure takes time and requires patience. When the dental graft becomes a solid mass of bone connected to the patient’s original bone, then we can proceed to the next step.

Why would a patient choose the Oral Health Center for their dental bone graft versus any other oral surgeons in the Jerusalem area?

What sets the Oral Health Center apart is the provision of complete care under one roof. Patients really appreciate this. They don’t have to shop around or risk falling between the cracks. Everything can be done at our center by an extremely competent oral surgeon who has had many years of experience with bone grafting, guided bone regeneration, and all types of different synthetic materials to build up defective jawbone.

Is there any pain associated with dental bone grafts?

We typically perform dental bone graft procedures using local anesthesia. In most instances, there is no associated pain. Patients need to follow our aftercare instructions and go on a week’s regimen of antibiotic therapy. Healing is generally uncomplicated, straightforward, and uneventful with minimal swelling, discomfort, or pain.
