Biopsy in Jerusalem
What is an oral biopsy procedure?
A biopsy is a surgical procedure where any type of “lump” or growth in the oral cavity can be removed and sent to the pathology laboratory for evaluation.
It’s important to perform a biopsy and determine if aberrations are benign or malignant as this will classify any further medical treatment needed.
Why should I choose the Oral Health Center for my oral biopsy vs. other alternatives in Jerusalem?
At the Oral Health Center of Jerusalem, every patient undergoes an oral cancer detection examination and checkup for any type of raised areas or “lumps” and undetected swellings. We provide the added convenience of having an on-site oral and maxilo-facial surgeon. Any area of concern can be checked, removed if necessary and sent to the pathology department for further review.
Who is a candidate for a biopsy? Is there a specific age or population?
Any patient who expresses concern about something that’s bothering them, whether on their tongue, lips, cheeks, or throat, can have a full checkup by our oral surgeon and Dr. Prenzlau. If necessary, a simple biopsy can be taken right in the dental chair.
What is the procedure for a biopsy?
We apply a local anesthetic, resect a small piece of tissue, and send the sample to the pathology laboratory.
How long does the process or procedure take?
An oral biopsy is a very easy, quick procedure, typically lasting less than half an hour.
Is there a follow-up visit?
In most biopsy cases, some stitches are placed. Most often, we use resorbable sutures so that our patients don’t have to return to our office. Sometimes there’s follow-up care which entails our removing stitches after 7 to 10 days.
Additional information about biopsies
There’s great value to having an oral surgeon on the premises. In many instances, some of these lumps and bumps need no biopsy at all. The minute our oral surgeon examines the patient, he can determine what is needed. In many instances, the patient can be put at ease immediately by learning that there is no cause for alarm.
Is there pain associated with this procedure?
After a biopsy, patients experience minimal discomfort and can function normally immediately after the procedure.
How long should I expect the healing process to take?
The healing process is completed within a few days. Patients only need to rinse the area well with saline solution, take any type of analgesic for slight discomfort, and hopefully hear back from us that everything is normal and no cause for any concern!
